Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon is probably one of my favorite National Parks! Despite it's name, it isn't actually a canyon, but rather a collection of giant natural amphitheaters and geological structures called hoodoos. The red, orange, and white colors of the rock make for spectacular views - if you want an added wow factor, go while there's a light blanket of snow!

Bryce Canyon NP is located near Bryce, UT; a cute little town that's not nearly as busy as Moab or Springdale. Due to it's elevation, Bryce stays colder than the other parks in Utah, and can still feel like winter while other parks are starting to feel like spring - pack/plan accordingly.

Lodging:

  • I stayed at the history Ruby's Inn (which is now owned by Best Western) - it includes a large General Store and restaurant/buffet.

  • You can book a room at the popular Lodge at Bryce Canyon (in the actual park).

  • Wander Camp opened another location at Bryce Canyon if you're wanting to do the glamping experience.

  • Bryce Canyon NP is another epic park to camp in - it's a certified dark sky park! Sunset Campground is open from April 15th - October 31st.

Food:

  • If you're staying at Ruby's Inn, the Cowboy's Buffet and Steak Room is an easy option - I hadn't done a buffet in so long, so I decided to try it... I'd just stick with the regular menu.

  • The Lodge at Bryce Canyon offers a variety of food options; from fine dining to groceries and convenience-style items. An easy and great place to eat if you're also staying at the Lodge!

  • If you're looking for a warm drink and quick snack, Bryce Canyon Coffee Co. is a cute little spot.

The BEST hiking trail in Bryce Canyon is Queens Garden Trail to Navajo Loop/Wall Street (3 miles). Since it's a giant loop of connected trails, you can choose to go clockwise or counter-clockwise; if you have bad knees like me, and going down steep hills can be painful, I'd recommend going clockwise.

Other great hikes and viewpoints in Bryce Canyon:

  • Peekaboo Loop Trail (5.2 miles)

  • Mossy Cave Trail (.8 miles)

  • Inspiration Point, Bryce Point, Rainbow Point, and Sunrise and Sunset Point.

  • Natural Bridge

Some other exciting activities to do in Bryce Canyon NP: ATV Tours and Horseback Riding Tours - can also be booked through Ruby's Inn Horseback Adventure. Make sure to make these reservations in advance! I didn't think about it until I was there, and the horseback rides were all full. I guess I just need to go back ;)

If you have extra time, explore the Slot Canyons in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and/or the Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe, UT. It can be a nice way to spend a relaxing afternoon or evening; you'll need to book a soaking pass in advance.
